Big Wave Skiing is Born

Combining their passions for surfing and skiing, Mike Douglas and Cody Townshend are taking skiing to a whole new level. Using jet skis, they are towing into big Hawaiian surf with “surf skis” on their feet. Vermonter Jason Starr deserves a good bit of credit for this as well, as his Vermont-based Starr Surf Skis supplied some the skis for these guys. Starr has also been doing a bit of surf skiing himself here in the northeast, sans jet ski, by stand-up paddling into waves off the New England coast.

Here’s a great clip from Salomon’s Freeski TV about Douglas’s and Townshend’s recent skiing adventures…

[…] California skier and surfer, Chuck Patterson, is on a mission to put Starr’s surf skis to the ultimate test. He’s recently been towing into some good sized waves off the Pacific coast, and he’s skiing lines unlike any of us have skied before. This photo that Chuck captured on March 18 off the coast of northern California puts things into perspective… Chuck gets extra style points, too, for skiing these waves with his ski poles in hand! (See AdventureSkier post from Dec. 2009 for more surf-skiing) […]
